The giant sequoias of Northern California are the largest trees in the world, with trunks so thick that a hole can be dug through them for small cars to pass through. In 1881, in Yosemite National Park, a 2,000-year-old giant sequoia was also carved into a tunnel and became the most popular tourist attraction in Yosemite. The crossing stood for 88 years before a large hole was dug, which weakened the trees and eventually collapsed in a storm in 1969. The height of the tree is 70 meters, the base diameter is 8 meters, and the tunnel dug in it is 2 meters wide and 2.7 meters high. When the trend picked up, folks at Calaveras State Park, eager to stay on top, carved their cabin tree in the 1880s and ended up nearly killing it. It is now struggling to survive, with only one growing branch feeding the entire body. The tree still stands, but you can no longer walk through it.

A wealthy rancher named Hoskin bought a giant sequoia tree in the southern Sierra Nevada and carved a room into the trunk of the giant tree, which he named Tree House. Built between 1897 and 1902, the room is 3.6 meters in diameter and 2.7 meters high. Hoskin also installed a hinged wooden door and tried to live in the tree, but in the end, he found that there was always sap dripping from the roof inside the tree house.
